Here’s 10 Non-Aesthetic Reasons Why You Should Exercise

There are endless reasons to make exercise an important and consistent part of your daily routine but I think we have a tendency to forget how many incredible reasons there are outside of aesthetic goals to get your body moving. There is so much more to it! There’s so much going on internally behind the scenes when you set aside some time to break a sweat.

These are just some of the never ending reasons to pick up the weights and get your butt on the treadmill:

  1. The mental health benefits- great relief for people with depression and anxiety.

As someone that has personally dealt with depression and anxiety, I can honestly tell you that I think there is no better medicine than a good solid sweat session. When you get your body working, you enjoy the release of endorphins, elevating your mood and helping tremendously with stress relief.

This is YOUR time to get in the zone and leave your troubles at the door.

  1. Your time to clear your head.

I don’t know about you, but some of my best workouts have happened when I was stressed, sad, or angry. Exercise allows you to channel all of your emotions, positive and negative, towards something constructive.

I’ve never been one to curl up on the couch with a tub of Ben & Jerry’s when I’m feeling down. I know this is because moping has a tendency to make us feel worse about our problems! I could wallow… but will that help me improve my life in any way? Don’t think so.

Instead, exercise allows me to get all of those feelings out in a very physical way and use them towards bettering myself. In that way, I can take something that feels pretty negative at the time and find a way to benefit personally from it.

  1. It’s a great way to meet people!

Seriously, this is SUCH a great way to socialize. Why? Because the people you meet through your gym have similar mindsets and goals as you! These individuals are driven to better themselves even when they’re off the 9-5 clock, which means they will be supportive of your own fitness goals and great motivators for you to stay committed to them!

They say you are the 5 people you spend time with the most so it’s in your best interest to spend time with people that inspire you to push your limits, motivate you to keep bettering yourself, and remind you why this commitment to your health is so important.

  1. You will sleep better.

This has been a game changer for me. Exercise will improve the quality of your sleep and help you fall asleep faster. Performing some aerobic exercise in the afternoon or evening helps tire you out and get your body ready for some much needed quality down time.

  1. You’re probably even less active than you think.

Anyone who has a FitBit probably knows the shock of seeing how little you walk each day! I was honestly bummed the first time I looked down at my new little gadget only to realize that 9-5 cubicle life was seriously cramping my physical activity. I couldn’t believe how little I moved during the day after starting an office job.

It put things in perspective for me and amped up my motivation to get to the gym each afternoon and burn some cals.

  1. It boosts your self confidence through structure and goal setting.

Nothing boosts self confidence like setting large, challenging goals for yourself and achieving them! Setting big goals and breaking them into smaller, actionable milestones allows you to receive positive feedback quickly in response to your hard work in the gym. This is a HUGE confidence booster for you!

The beauty of working out is that there is a very direct correlation between the amount of work you put in and the result achieved. There really is no luck involved and even skill means little in comparison to hard work when it comes to exercise. This makes it a surefire way to see results and build your self esteem.

  1. It can help put you in “flow” state.

If you haven’t yet read Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, I highly recommend you get on that. Basically, it discusses how humans are at their happiest when they enter flow state. Being in flow means that you are so in the zone doing what you’re doing, that all of your troubles, your past, and your future, your stresses, and the world around you just slip away. You are fully in the moment and you are fully concentrated on the task at hand.

Exercise is a fantastic way to enter flow state and it is discussed in depth in this book as a way to achieve the highest level of happiness.

  1. You will have MORE energy!

Exercise has actually been shown to reduce fatigue. Working out improves your blood flow, which means you will increase the flow of oxygen and nutrients to your body’s tissues. Thus, you’re improving your overall health and reducing feelings of general fatigue.

  1. It preserves your quality of life for years to come.

Exercise lowers your risk for heart disease by lowering your blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, and maintaining your weight in a healthy range. It is also believed that exercise lowers your risk for certain types of cancer. If you wish to live a long, happy, healthy life it is vital that you exercise regularly!

  1. It’s FUN!

Honestly, sometimes this is the only reason I get my butt to the gym! It should feel like adult play time! If you’re feeling like your workouts just aren’t fun for you, try something else. There are so many different ways to get your heart rate going. You can and should thoroughly enjoy your time spent exercising.
